Tasting #15 (04/01/11) ~ April Fools

Theme: In the spirit of April Fools Day, the attendees where asked to bring a wine in an attempt to "trick" the others as to what it really was. Each person blindly tasted each wine while trying to guess the grape and region. The big winner was Abbey (the pregnant one!), go figure!

Laforet Chardonnay 2007, French (13%) -- label says: "Laforet is a classic Chardonnay. Its Burgundian style, dry, fruity and elegant, makes it the perfect accompaniment to food. It is vinified by Joseph Drouhin, whose name has come to represent the very best from Burgundy.

Macon-Villages Chardonnay 2009, French (12.5%) -- notes from WineChateau.com: Tasting notes
Colour : A pale gold with green tints, brilliant and clear.
On the nose : Flowery, fruity aromas with notes of citrus fruits, mint and honeysuckle. Exotic, even spicy scents.
In the mouth : Well-balanced. The dominant notes are reminiscent of grass and flowers. Mâcon-Villages wines are dry, light, lively, charming and fresh. Their spontaneity and lightness make them very seductive.

O'Reilly's Pinot Gris 2009, Columbia Valley WA (13%) -- label says: "Each O'Reilly's wine is crafted from exeptional vineyard sites throughout the Pacific NW. The vineyards are carefully tended to provide highly concentrated fruit through low yields and sensible stewardship. Minimal handling in the winery guarantees that vineyard expression shines through every wine.

Torres Coronas Tempranillo 2005, Spain (13.5%) -- label says: "For more than a century, Coronas has overcome all adversity, like an incident in 1939 when a deflected bomb exploded in the main vat causing its complete destruction. However, Coronas has always been and continues to be the silent witness to history. Nowadays, it is known for its quality across more than 120 countries through the world. Made with Tempranillo (86%) and Caberet Sauvignon (14%). Intense colour, with expressive aromas reminiscent of plum with a vanilla background from ageing. Perfect accompaniment to meat, cheese and the traditional paella. Serve at 17-18 C.

Lan Crianza Rioja (Tempranillo) 2006, Spain (13.5%) -- notes from website: "Elaborated with grapes coming from selected vineyards located at Rioja Alta area. Fermentation of destemmed grapes in stainless steel tanks. maceration for 15 days with continuous pumping over in order to achieve a good extraction of color. Aged in American & French oak barrels for at least 12 months, followed by several months in the bottle. Has brilliant red cherry with violet hues. Elegant ageing aromas with fruity notes. it develops a good balance at the palate coming from the sweet & elegant tannins. Serve with cold starters, pasta, cheeses. Perfect as wine by glass.

Lincoln Peak Marquette 2009, Vermont (13.8%) -- label says: "Lincoln Park Marquette is a hearty red wine made entirely from Marquette grapes grown in our vineyard. With flavors of ripe cherry and black pepper, it goes well with roasts, steaks, sausage & stews. Serve at room temp & let it breath well before drinking.
